I find that the average understanding of the Aztecs is still unfortunately heavily influenced by colonial narratives, especially in how their mythology is talked about. Funny that you bring up Sumeria, was just playing as Sumeria in Civlization VI.

I tend to use google scholar to try and find academic articles on what I'm looking into, there's also jstor. Proper scholarly books written by experts are useful too, I have two that are dedicated just to Tezcatlipoca. Also helps to go for recent research, history is not a static field. I know that study of the Ancient Near East has a problem with a bible scholars twisting facts, so avoiding sources that bring in the bible is probably a safe bet.

I've heard praise for Goddesses in Context, which is about Mesopotamia as a whole. Looks like a long read, but working your way through long dense resources is all part of mythology research. Here's a link to it in pdf form.
