I’m going to start off this month with an important announcement about the next month, in July the Warthog Report will go on a month long hiatus. The hope is to avoid burning out, and maybe have more time to do writing not related to the Warthog Report.
Now that I’ve gotten the key information out, on to the usual.
This Month
Hyperion’s story will be coming to a close this month with the final two chapter. After the July hiatus it will be a time for the leading role to switch to somebody else after the usual vote. The next chapter is already fully written with several sections of the finale already done as well.
I like to leave the non-fiction topics up in the air, but I’ve been debating trying to bounce between academic and more casual topics month to month, so something like another research summary this month and another talk about crossovers the next. But I’m not committing to it yet. You’ll see later this month if I go for that approach.
Last Month
REVEALED: The TRUTH behind Dracula
You may think you know the story of Dracula because you read the actual book, but in fact it merely showed the surface of the true events it depicted. I uncovered the original manuscript as compiled by Mina Harker and published by Bram Stoker in a dream I had, where it had extensive commentary from a later author revealing the true nature of events. Whe…
Last month had a bit of unscheduled short fiction, where I decided to just go crazy on purpose. It started as a parody of how certain media properties use mythology, but I decided it was better to be a little serious in the purposeful madness. As a result there are some parts I’m genuinely into, mainly the invented backstory for the dragon in Beowulf, who has intrigued me since I first read the poem.
Hyperion's Story: Reflection
| Prologue/Introduction | | Table of Contents | Profiles | Non-Gamer Primer |
This month featured one of the key moments I knew I wanted to cover in Hyperion’s story, a dream fight with his own draconic form. A lot of the story was structured around how to build up to that, though of course there’s still some more to come afterwards.
Galavant
Some shows take a while to earn a reputation, having low ratings yet also ardent supporters who continue to sing its praise well after the conclusion. And today’s example of that is Galavant, a musical fantasy comedy series that aired on ABC. The central joke of the story goes as follows: the evil king has kidnapped the hero’s love interest and is forcin…
This is another example of me experiencing a piece of media and quickly writing about it. I don’t usually watch TV on my own so in that way it was a bit of a change of pace for me, good to be impulsive some times. Also I find what ended up as the cover image for the post funny in a way that’s hard to explain.
The Art of the Crossover Roster
When it comes to crossovers in video games the most common tend to be fighting games, with racing and other sports in second and third place for frequency. What these have in common is that they allow for large rosters of playable characters, which makes sense when the characters are a large part of the appeal. Having grown up with crossovers like Smash…
It was unintentional but very convenient that Multiversus came back on the same day I posted this. Crossovers are something I’ve talked about before and could talk about more. For follow ups it could be fun to do a ‘build the roster’ type collaboration expanding on the Star Wars idea, and talking about video game genres other than fighting games that could host crossovers.
That’s all for now. Thank you for continuing to read the Warthog Report.
